POP DVD - Few bands have stayed on top, both creatively and commercially, for as long as the arena-friendly rock quartet U2. A quarter century removed from the bands modest Dublin roots, 2004 saw the release How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb follow U2s standard release trajectory to top of the charts. The subsequent tour was among the years hottest tickets; and this concert DVD — filmed over two May nights at Chicago’s United Center — demonstrates why U2 remains one of rocks uniquely powerful attractions, the only band of its generation able to strut the stadium risers with Rolling Stones-like authority. In U2 Live from Chicago, the band mixes such recent hits as “Original of the Species,” “Vertigo,” and “Sometimes You Can’t Make It on Your Own” with the early anthems “New Year’s Day” and Sunday Bloody Sunday, as well as mid-period favorites such as “Pride,” “Mysterious Ways,” “One,” “Beautiful Day,” and many more.
